In 1997, On's experimentation with different guitar techniques led to tendinitis and carpal tunnel syndrome in both his upper extremities. Diverse self-treatment (mostly proper stretches) for a few years eventually allowed him to recover full use of his hands.
He founded O.C. Guitar Lessons in 2003 and taught both six- & seven-string guitar (and bass and keyboards) through it full-time for several years. In 2007 he cured his own "colitis" (a digestive disease which doctors told him was incurable for 8 years) and moved to Santa Cruz to focus more fully on his research and publishing projects in a healthier environment.
